About ShadeVault
The ingredient-first makeup dupe finder built on color science and transparency.
What ShadeVault Is
ShadeVault is a free beauty intelligence tool that helps you find affordable alternatives to luxury makeup, analyze product ingredients, and match shades across brands. Think of it as a search engine for smarter beauty shopping.
We cover three core areas: dupe finding (matching luxury products to budget-friendly alternatives), ingredient analysis (breaking down what's actually in your products), and shade matching (using color science to find your perfect match across brands).
Our Mission
We believe everyone deserves access to great makeup without overpaying. Our mission is to help beauty lovers make informed choices by providing transparent, data-driven product comparisons — no sponsorships, no editorial bias, just algorithms and data.
Whether you're looking for a drugstore alternative to a high-end lipstick, want to avoid certain ingredients, or need to find an exact shade match in a different brand, ShadeVault gives you the information to decide for yourself.
How Our Data Works
Every match on ShadeVault is generated algorithmically, not by hand. Our system compares products across three dimensions:
- Shade similarity — We use Delta-E color science (the industry standard for measuring color difference) to quantify how close two shades really are.
- Finish matching — We match products by finish type (matte, satin, dewy, shimmer) so dupes feel the same on your lips.
- Community validation — User-submitted dupes and ratings help surface matches that algorithms alone might miss.
No product is manually promoted or demoted. Rankings are purely a function of these data signals.
Our Data Sources
ShadeVault aggregates product data from multiple public and community sources:
- Open Beauty Facts — An open-source database of cosmetic products and their ingredients.
- Retailer catalogs — Publicly available product listings from major beauty retailers.
- CosIng — The European Commission's database of cosmetic ingredients and their functions.
- Community contributions — Dupe suggestions and shade comparisons submitted by our users.
We regularly update our database to keep product information, pricing, and availability as current as possible.
What Makes Us Different
Most dupe lists are editorial — someone tries two products and shares their opinion. ShadeVault takes a fundamentally different approach:
- Ingredient-first matching — We compare actual formulations, not just surface-level appearance.
- Delta-E color science — Our shade matching uses the same perceptual color distance metric used in manufacturing and print.
- Transparent scoring — Every match shows you exactly why it scored the way it did — ingredient overlap percentage, color distance, and price savings.
- No pay-to-play — Brands cannot pay to appear higher in our results. Rankings are algorithmic.
