Is Geraniol Safe in Makeup?

Ingredients1 min read

Generally safe, but can cause allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

Geraniol is a naturally-occurring fragrance ingredient found in roses, geraniums, and citronella. It's widely used in cosmetics for its sweet, floral scent and appears in over 60 makeup products.

The EU requires products containing geraniol above 0.001% to list it on labels due to its potential as an allergen. While it has restriction code III/78, this simply means it must be declared when present in certain concentrations — not that it's dangerous.

Who should avoid it: People with known fragrance allergies or sensitive skin may experience contact dermatitis, redness, or irritation from geraniol-containing products.

The ingredient is considered safe for most people when used in cosmetic formulations at typical concentrations. However, since it's a known allergen, patch testing is recommended if you have sensitive skin or a history of fragrance reactions.
